The Metrix Shaft Calibrator is a precise tool for verifying the output sensitivity of proximity probe systems commonly used on machinery shafts or piston rods. These systems are typically pre-calibrated to a sensitivity of 200 mV/mil (or 7.87 mV/μm) by manufacturers, using a standard 4140 steel target. For optimal calibration accuracy, the Metrix provides different models:

  1. Metrix 9060 SCDM (Shaft Calibrator Dial Micrometer): Suitable for smaller probes, such as 5mm or 8mm diameter probes, with probe bodies shorter than 75mm (3 inches).
  2. Metrix 9060 SCTS (Shaft Calibrator Touch Select): Designed for larger probes (11mm or more) or probes with bodies exceeding 75mm. This model also supports reverse mount probes directly within the probe holder.

Using the shaft calibrator helps accurately determine the real sensitivity of a machine’s shaft or rod when used with a proximity probe. This data can then be applied to adjust monitoring systems for correct readings of vibration, thrust, or rod drop.

To perform a calibration:

  • Secure a proximity probe with known sensitivity onto the calibrator’s probe bracket.
  • Use a quality digital voltmeter (DVM) to take several readings.
  • The shaft calibrator’s non-metallic (nylon) base ensures that the probe system readings remain unaffected by the base material.

This quick and effective calibration method enables reliable system tuning for machinery monitoring.
